My Motherhood Was Built: Part 2

My motherhood was built over years, laboring in prayer.

My motherhood required piles of paperwork, home visits, and specialized training.

My motherhood weighed heavily in the stillness of silence.

My motherhood was chosen through our story, written in a profile book.

My motherhood was changed with a single phone call.

My motherhood was entrusted, a commitment not only to him, but also to his first mom.

My motherhood was again determined by the bang of a gavel.

You came, unexpectedly, yet hoped for all at the same time. We met in the hospital where you were born-came in with one mom, and left with another. Brokenness and repair, loss and gain, sorrow and joy, beauty from ashes all in the same place, proving that we can feel both things at once. You wrapped your tiny little fingers around one of mine, a simple gesture that made my heart so full I thought it might burst. What a joy it is to be your mom, MJ.

No matter how motherhood is built, it never quite goes as planned. Dreams and hopes and expectations going awry pushes us to the limits of our patience, strength, faith, and boundaries of our love. But it is in that perseverance where our character is tested, that we are made better. The best things are often wrapped up in the hardest things.

Don’t give up, your story is not over yet.

“Through thorny ways, leads to a joyful end.” -Be Still My Soul

In 2020 I wrote a post on social media for Mother’s Day titled “My Motherhood Was Built.” At the time I only had one child, and that post celebrated the way in which he made me a mama. This is a part 2, celebrating the joy of becoming a mama again, in a similar way, yet with a very different story and process. You can read the original post here.
